Today’s front page reveals a male soldier transitioning to female. What struck me was the fixation with long hair and polished nails as defining features of his transition. The media and MTF community seems obsessed with representing female within the parameters of the male gaze. Trans women are groomed within an inch of their life and seem a caricature of what it is to be a woman. Strip back the veneer and how distinguishable are they from men?
I think society can support individuals creatively expressing themselves but can the trans community please stop adding to the stereotype of what a woman is. A stereotype that sits somewhere between the pages of vogue and playboy. As a woman you do not speak for me or to me.
